Writing to the American pundit Walter Lippmann in 1937, Hayek lamented: “I wish I could make my ‘progressive’ friends … understand that democracy is possible only under capitalism and that collectivist experiments lead inevitably to fascism of one sort or another.” He decided to write a learned polemic, which he dedicated “to the Socialists of all parties.”
